I saw the "atomic bomb" scene with Al's son a little differently than Caryn.  It seemed natural to me that the son would want to discuss it, because he knew that Al had been at Hiroshima.  I'm sure that the bomb was on the boy's mind because everyone followed the war closely, and it would have been discussed at school; many classrooms had big maps with the battles marked on it, and of course schoolchildren were recruited for scrap and rubber drives. I also liked this scene because it showed how estranged Al had become from his children. Also, for us, it foreshadows the Generation Gap of the 1960s, the seeds of which were sown in those years. --- Debbi S.

I thought that the atomic bomb scenes were interesting because if the film were made today I think there would be extended discussion of the impacts to atomic weapons and those discussions were still in the film even though the Cold War atomic threat hadn't really sunk in yet. I also thought it was notable that Butch openly states that if there is another war the world would basically be destroyed but this was before the idea of MAD that would come to dominate the 1950s-1960s.

Another view on the atomic bomb talk scene... I found it hard to watch the tension between father and son when Dad brought souvenirs home for his boy, like the samurai sword and the scarfI think it was pretty brave for the movie to portray a young man who was obviously uncomfortable with the demonization of the Japanese.  Similarly, the fact that the word "divorce" is even mentioned at all in this 1946 film is shocking.  -- P.A.
