I think this movie did very well in telling the story of the 54th regiment. In class, we talked about how Black soldiers faced a lot of discrimination from the white Union soldiers. It was definitely clear that the white soldiers lacked respect for the Black soldiers, even though they were fighting for the same side (but that didn't necessarily mean they were fighting for the same cause). In the lecture, we were told a quote by a union soldier comparing African Americans to hogs, and in the movie, a white Union soldier used that line as the new Black enlistees entered the camp. The second occurrence of discrimination was when the newly appointed Black officer stepped in to deescalate a fight between one of his men (Denzel Washington) and a white Union soldier. The soldier made a comment about the Black officer which just showed the blatant disregard for the Black officer as a person, as well as a soldier. One thing that made me wonder was about how the white Union soldiers began cheering for the 54th regiment as they left for Ft. Wagner. It makes me wonder if at any point during the war, whtie Union soldiers got over their prejudices and began to see themselves as one with colored regiments like the 54th. -- Alex M.

One thing I thought the movie got right was the portrayal of many blacks inability to read or write.  I think every soldier in the regiment was illiterate except for Thomas, who grew up a free black in the north.  Since the other men were former slaves, they were unable to read, and I like how they were not just enabled to read all of the sudden.  Also, at the end of the movie when the confederate soldiers were going through the bodies and discovered that of Colonel Shaw they picked him up and placed him with his troops.  According to account by Susie King Taylor, Shaw was laid to rest next to his soldiers and I like how the movie implemented this because he had grown so close to his men. –afrisk
