It's interesting to think of the film as encouraging resilience, because Scarlett essentially "pulls herself up by her own bootstraps". While she marries a guy or two along the way, she has enough wits and strength to rebuild her own empire. Scarlett advances herself through her own land and even draws a significant income from the Georgia pines of her home state. | + | I definitely saw a connection between this film and the time period it was made. Something I noticed was the difference between Melanie and Scarlett being a statement of the old and new woman of the United States. Just coming out of the roaring twenties (and the depression) women were drastically changing their identies and becoming what some might say, more masculine. By Scarlett's outspokenness and keen business skills, she is the representation of what women in the 20's and 30's were striving to become. Melanie on the other hand is a representation of the old women. Submissive, gentle, highly fragile; all these things were associated with the old ways and in the end, Melanie dies, while Scarlett continues to thrive. _- Victoria Y. | ||
