While it may be a minor detail, I thought that the scene before the ship arrives on land when they pass within 5 feet of a ship with wealthy, dining Americans was ridiculous.  It might just be my opinion, but I think that had that actually occurred more would've happened than the orchestra stopping so the rich Americans could stare.  I can't imagine that seeing a ship completely controlled by blacks in the 1840s was something that happened normally.  While I think the film tried to use that scene as a way to transition from the ship to the mainland, it never actually happened and was just somewhat distracting. -Melissa E.

One thing that really irritated me about this movie was, not only Morgan Freeman's character being made up, but also the atmosphere of the movie itself. I really wish that the movie was centered more around the stories of the Mendi... and not of America. While there part in the was important too, I really think including the Mendi in the movie more would have made the movie more rounded and accurate to history. When the abolitionists brought the translators the point was to get their story, however the movie doesn't really show that. Sigh. Oh well. Even Spielberg isn't perfect. Also the fact that the movie didn't really stick to the whole slave trade being illegal thing was another annoying point. It is yet [http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/74 another story] about the justification of the white man.
