This film was very accurate (especially comparing to the other films we have seen so far). I liked how they showed the difficulty with the language barrier. This was not like Pocahontas where one minute they can't understand each other, and then the next minute they could understand each other perfectly. The film showed very well the confrontation of people from different cultures. It was nice not always having subtitles because it was like we were in the position of the Americans. They are trying to understand what the Mende are saying, but they can't. It also shows well how complicated the American legal system and I think they portrayed the different trials very well. -- Justine R.

I have to say, overall, I was much less disappointed with this film than with most historical films.  The major points were accurate without being dumbed down, such as the serious language barriers, the intricacies of the court system, and the gruesome voyage itself.  It would have been easy to make the film shorter, less violent, more palatable, by cutting things out or changing bits and pieces of the storyline.  I'm very glad that didn't happen.  Parts of this movie are disgusting, off-putting, and morally uncomfortable.  As they should be.  - Cilla
