| + | Although Professor McClurken did mention the existence of free black colonies that existed across the coastal areas of the south, I seriously doubt that rich, landowning whites would be able to successfully hide and be accepted into the colony. Charlotte and the rest of Benjamin's children remain there for an extended period of time and there is no racial tension shown at all. The servant who originally took care of the children in the beginning, and was captured by the British after Thomas was killed, was in the free black colony as well. If she had really been captured she would have been pressed into service for the British to support their efforts, rather than released to live as a free person. -Melissa E. | ||
