To answer Rachel's question, "How influential are movies?," I think the answer is very influential. However, I don't think society sees it at quite the same level that in did in the past. The article talked about how in 1907 and 1908 the mayor of NYC was peer pressured in to shutting down nickelodeons and movie theaters and a presidential committee even found movies to support "illicit lovemaking" (13). I certainly don't see anything like that happening today. However, I do believe that movies still have power even today. As Dr. McClurken mentioned on Tuesday, most Americans get their history (and I think other perceptions of the way life is) from film. - Kelly R. | To answer Rachel's question, "How influential are movies?," I think the answer is very influential. All that said i at least understand what Mintz and Roberts are driving at in terms of movies being a type of window into the social and cultural aspects of America. If we go by the concept that Hollywood wants to produce pieces that will be readily consumed by the populace, it is fair to say that films can reflect the climate or a culture at any given point of time. Films, like literature, are not created in a vacuum but rather are in response to an external stimulus. WWII it's time to make propaganda, in the 60's and mid 70's Hollywood produces fluff films for purely entertainment. However we can see as the tastes of the public change, those producing adapt to the interests of the public. | ||
