I agree with Caryn. This article acknowledges the influence (sometimes negative or incorrect) that the film industry has on a mass population, but it also acknowledges the benefits of that influence. It seems to me that Ross is stating that the film industry isn't necessarily good for historians, but it is a good starting base for people who may not have a whole lot of background information. - Victoria Y.

I thought it was very interesting when this article started mentioning the types of films that were popular in the past ("renewed prosperity in the 1920s led... to films about promises and consumption" along with rich boy/girl falls in love with poor boy/girl, while in the 1930s there were many about sexual liaisons crossing social and racial lines.) It got me to thinking about when the 1940s and WWII come around,  they turn into propaganda films trying to stressing unity and patriotism. There were so many of those films John Wayne and Claudette Colbert appeared in several of them. The producers churned out a great number of them during the war period (check out this wikipedia page of WWII Films made during the war [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_films] to see a list). While today, I can only think of two films, off the top of my head, that deal with conflicts currently going on, Jar Head and Hurt Locker. (This might not have anything to do with the discussion but the differences between the two time periods and the films being made struck me as huge and showed how the movie business has changed.) -Megan Mc.
