This article I found to be empowering for anyone who has a degenerative disease, they know they are not alone and while a cure would be ideal, they can survive and still enjoy life. The one issue I had with the article was when she discussed the use of the word, "cripple" and said, "[people]-wince at the word ''cripple'', as they do not at handicapped or disabled."(317). I do not think that is true, as someone who has personal experience with a disabled person I know they are still looked at differently when the word disabled is brought up, or someone notices their license plate with disabled tags, and people make comments. No matter how a person is classified as crippled, disabled, or handicapped there is always an ignorant person who will make a remark, but people like Nancy make the best of it. -Megan W. | This article I found to be empowering for anyone who has a degenerative disease, they know they are not alone and while a cure would be ideal, they can survive and still enjoy life. | + | Like Megan, I was so uplifted by and impressed with Nancy Mairs' strength, courage and humor, maybe not despite her disbility but because of it. Mairs empahsizes that her MS is no who she is, it does not define her. She is a person living with MS, not a victim of it. However, at the same time, she acknowledges her disability and how it has helped shape her into a fierce and stalwart person. That balance is key is Nancy Mairs' ability to live with and push through her disability. -- kokeefe | ||
