This article was really enlightening and definitely brought to light another side of the Civil Rights movement (the involvement of white women) that is not often discussed. I think it is necessary to acknowledge that some southern whites really did want to help the Civil Rights movement. I know many of the above posts think that the amount of help received from white women was limited and I agree but I think this article did a good job of showing both sides to white women's involvement. I can't imagine that women like Virginia Durr were common it seems much more likely that the norm was closer to the white women who resented any interference with their black maids ability to clean their houses, the kind of women who passively supported segregation laws.-Emma Peck | This article was really enlightening and definitely brought to light another side of the Civil Rights movement (the involvement of white women) that is not often discussed.
