I really liked reading this piece on Naomi Craig. I love reading personal stories of people who actually got to experience what we learn about in class. Mrs.Craig's point of view was a unique one because she was from the North. She said she felt naive. I wonder if a lot of black people from the North felt naive that they didn't really know how bad it really was in the South. There were two parts that struck me in particular. One was when she was talking about the war in Vietnam. She said that even though she didn't agree with the war she didn't protest it either because she felt bad for those soldiers who went in and for their mothers. This was interesting because she gave an African American view of the Vietnam war. I also liked the part about when she went to Washington DC for the March on Washington. She said, "Look, this is history. We need to be in this." Her desire to be a part of this historical day and event reminded me of how I think a lot of black Americans and even white Americans felt about the inauguration of President Obama. -Amy Van Ness

Rev. Naomi Craig’s interview was quite interesting. We hear and read so much about the Southern African Americans during this time; it is nice to have a perspective of a Northern African American.  I was touched by the same section as Megan and Christine. Craig’s description of her naivety of the south and how beautiful it was to see so many black people in one place at the college  was touching. I was also intrigued by her comments on finding employment and searching for a home. Craig explains “here I was dressed lovely, thinking that was the first step. And here was some dowdy, ugly woman telling me I couldn't have a job.” Illustrating that during the depression era there were limited jobs and even further limitations for African American women. Her description of the trouble she faced buying a house in Rhode Island was kind of heart breaking. I couldn’t imagine getting my hopes up in a phone conversation with a realtor just to have him see the color of my skin and tell me there are no houses available. This just proves that it is a great misconception that racial discrimination only took place in the South. - Caryn

She couldn't even hold her own mortgage, she had to have a white man hold it! This just proves that it is a great misconception that racial discrimination only took place in the South.-Caryn
