'''I think this story provided a good contrast to the readings that talk about all of the success people found because of the war. The war did improve the lives of many people, and following the war was there was unprecedented wealth, but there were also people who didn’t find success and continued in the same poor conditions they always had. Though this reading is part of a fictional novel, I think it provides a balance for all of the improvements in Americans lives that we’ve read about.''' -- Taylor Brann | '''I think this story provided a good contrast to the readings that talk about all of the success people found because of the war. | + | I think this story was a good inclusion, because I personally have not heard much about wartime migration and like Taylor was saying it is a good contrast to all the women who benefited from the war despite the circumstances. In many ways these story seemed like something that could have been written about an early 20th century family. I was surprised by the power the husband exerted over his wife and her desire to appease him. Gertie is a contrast to some of the other women we read about who seemed much more independent. I wonder what there lifestyle was in Kentucky that her husband Clovis was so anxious to leave it to pursue opportunities in Detroit, because more than once Gertie compares her Detroit apartment to her Kentucky home and finds it lacking.--Emma Peck | ||
