Putting it into context and the time period, its not that surprising there were more opportunities for black women during the war, there was more opportunities for everybody.  As with all the sources we read, having an individual story, a tangible person does make things seem more real, more personal, more easily relateable. - Christine L

I appreciated this piece because it provided insight into the life of a working African American woman. While in class, we discuss the concept of black women being forced to work in order to provide for their family, but this in particular allows us to see what it was really like. One thing i noticed throughout Hill's piece was the lack of nationalism in her tone. In many history classes, teachers comment on the enthusiastic nationalism that many women expressed in their jobs. Many saw it as a "calling" to help their nation and support their troops. Hill seems to be concerned with working for a living. Was this a common trend? --MDvorak
