| + | I thought reading this article was really kind of sad because of how much Jeanne didn't seem to want anything to do with her Japanese culture. I don't think it was really a conscious decision on her part, its just that she was American and wanted to do American things. She didn't want to learn the traditional Japanese form of dance but instead wanted to do baton twirling and go to catechism. Furthermore, it was pretty obvious that she didn't care whether or not she found a Japanese husband or not. Jeanne and probably many other girls just like her really were not foreign at all. Jeanne didn't even speak Japanese. Americans at this time were terrified of anyone of that race and threw them all into the same category whether they belonged or not. This is a perfect example of someone who didn't belong. Women were already fighting hard for more equality and these girls had it even harder because, just like African Americans, they didn't have gender OR race on their side. - Angie | ||
