I thought this article was really interesting and it was nice to see that the government was giving attention to an area that was obviously in need of federal aid or even just attention. I think sometimes we take for granted how the improvements in modern medicine and healthcare overall have made childbirth significantly safer for women. I was sad to see that the program ended in 1929. Judging by these letters the Bureau was important and helpful to a lot of women. --Emma

I think it's hard for us to to imagine today how terrifying and dangerous pregnancy and childbirth actually was for women in the US not all that long ago. As these letters show, women were very often on their own in dealing with questions or complications because it seems that society relegated matters of childbearing, like birth control, largely to the realm of private discourse. Women had to seek advice from friends and family, and even then many did not feel comfortable discussing their questions, and, like the woman in the second letter, desperately sought the advice of strangers. It feel as though women were becoming more and more isolated in some respects even as they moved into the public sphere. -Mary Ann
