This is another example of how the U.S. government attempted to assimilate the Native Americans, and in the process took away their land and changed their lifestyles. | + | Where did the impetus for government intervention come from? Perhaps it came as a result of the kind of Progressive-minded reform that was sweeping the country during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. And if that is the case, then wasn't much of that drive for reform brought to bear by women--we discussed how women entered into the political sphere in order to help ameliorate peoples' lives, and the Native American was considered to be backward almost universally during this time period. Wouldn't it make sense that women at some point encourage the government to interfere with the lives of Native Americans? The push for the Americanization of Native Americans came as a result of the Progressive reform movement and many arguments have been made about the influence women had on governmental reforms from this period, so would it be such a stretch to say that women had a hand in some of those "reforms" that in retrospect turned out to be fairly disastrous? -schang | ||
