| + | I was actually surprised that Bertha Palmer used her speech at the World Fair to both honor women and criticise men's attitudes towards women. Women had been allowed a space at the Fair to display their own creativity, but it was within a well defined and controlled "sphere" designated by men. With Palmer's speech, we are getting to see a woman recognize the inequality of the separate spheres doctrine and publicly push for the inclusion of women in more than restrictive "spheres" constructed by men. After all, how can a woman truly be free when she is being oppressed by men in all that she does? -- CBrau | ||
