I agree with Kristina, Amy, and Katelyn it is interesting that a white citizen is standing up for Indian women. Most white people thought Indians were inferior to them and it is nice to see that someone does care about them. I think the author used the term "pretend Lieut" because they did not want to think people in the Army could be as cruel as any criminal. - LeAnn Taggart | I agree with Kristina, Amy, and Katelyn it is interesting that a white citizen is standing up for Indian women. | + | I'm going to argue the opposite and say that it's possible that these citizens weren’t necessarily standing up for the Native Americans, but rather looking out for themselves. A good reputation and a spot in heaven was reserved for moral and self-controlled citizens, and Native Americans weren’t on par with slaves, so rape couldn’t really be excused as exercising control over your property. Thomas Jefferson didn’t like slavery because he felt it was detrimental to white society, not because he felt that blacks were equal to whites. Perhaps these complaining citizens felt that raping Indian women was detrimental to white society and not because they were concerned about the Indians. -- Taylor Brann | ||
