In Sarah Haynesworth Gayle’s diary she talks about how her slaves are no longer as obedient as they had been previously. She describes them as lazy and full of complaints. Even her favorite slave would not listen. What is interesting is that she takes this as an attack on herself, she states “I am unable to accommodate myself to the disagreeable change.” I’m not exactly sure what she was expected to do, or what she could do. – Erin Sanderson

I also found it interesting that she was taking the slaves' disobedience so personally. I guess it goes back to what we talked about in class, that most southerners thought slaves were happy to be slaves and that they had a paternal relationship with them. She's probably confused because she thinks that her slaves have such a great life so why would they disobey? It's crazy the way that people can make themselves believe things that are obviously not true. -Katelyn Lease

In this context of time, this was before Nat Turner’s rebellion in 1831, but way after other attempted slave rebellions. So, I am curious as to where this change was coming from?  – Erin Sanderson
