| − | | + | In the Malefactors and Complaints there seems to be a general way of punishment. You were either whipped, sent away, and or had to pay a fine. The women seemed to be treated much more harshly then men and they tended to be made an example of, in particular Margaret Brewster. It seems harsh for a women to be stripped from waste down, tide to a cart and to have received 20 stripes for coming to church not looking appropriate for the occasion. The way she was described she almost sounds as if she's homeless. John Man was sentenced with bond of 200 lbs for his good behavior for beating of his servant but received no stripes (which would have seemed fitting for what he had done to her.) Then again she was a woman and a servant though it does state she was set free from her indenture. - Marsha Himes |
