I think Phillis Wheatley had an extremely rare story. She was a slave who was taught by her owners to read and write, she was sent to Europe to publish her poems and was freed upon her return. What is more rare is that Phillis was not only literate but aware of the politics of the time, as shown in her address to George III. As a slave who was owned I wonder what parallels she drew between that and the colonies that were owned by England. – Erin Sanderson

I do like Phillis Wheatley's story.  I'm sure it was very rare to even have such education and praise, and to be sent to England to publish poetry for a white woman, so for a slave to achieve such heights is quite remarkable.  I also find the subject of her poem rather shocking, seeing as how she is/was a slave.  To speak out against the king (or anyone) for that matter and be black AND a woman must have taken real courage.  - Christine Leckner
