| − | | + | Although this article was not very long, nor really an article it provided a lot of clues about the slaves of Jefferson. This list definitely makes it appear as if Jefferson saw them as property. Especially when he includes in the list the children of some of his slaves instead of saying “Name, ____’s daughter” or something to that extent he simply writes “Hanah’s child.” The names also bring to mind what we talked about in class last week about the naming conventions. The names on the list are more Anglican than African with names like Patty, Sam, and Lucy. The name Quomina is the only one that seems to stick out. This shows that Virginia was more like the Northern states in that respect.–Megan Mc. |
