In response to Mary Beth's question, the Jewish women wished to move to America after all the uprisings and secular movements in Russia, many women and their families felt that the Old World was a dangerous place for familiy and community. Some left for economic reasons, some for America's "wide, open spaces," and some for political reasons, like draft avoidance and discontent with politics and the social order. The idea of the woman as the primary breadwinner remained the same, but the roles had changed. Now mothers stayed home and took care of domestic duties, while the daughters were the providers of family income. Values remained essentially the same. - Celia
