| + | I've actually been to Ellis Island and when you visit that place, nowhere do they refer to it as the "Isle of Tears." Bad for publicity, I suppose. What these families had to go through to get into America sounds just horrible and so bothersome. The fact that one wrong answer could prevent you from your final destination for days is just absurd. America was seen as the land of opportunity for a lot of the immigrant groups that came through and being immediately greeted with such a harsh environment must have made these families worry from the start. It is a bit comforting to know, however, that the guards at Ellis Island did their best to look out for the young women traveling alone. That had to be terrifying on a number of levels. -Kelly W. | ||
