| + | I find both of these articles, and some of those that we have read in the past, incredibly depressing. I think that, along with many other similar occurrences, that groups of people feel, or felt, the need to make everyone conform to a single ideal, or that individuals and groups had the desire to assimilate entirely into another culture. Each culture and unit of it is unique and can provide a perspective on an aspect of life that one might not consider with out the understanding of the other or juxtaposition with one's own cultural background. Diversity makes us who we are and allows us both to define ourselves and to provide security within a group. Having it quashed would, I think, destroy our very sense of being. Therefore, I find it very sad that nineteenth-century americans, and others many times over, have felt the need to do so. -Lacey | ||
