I have been reading a lot of medical history lately and I found Martha’s diary passages in the winter very interesting in the fact that she gives good details on her ailments.  The details are so good it makes me wonder if the fact there are many times during the winter when they are feeling fatigued and colicky that maybe it might be due to lack of a completely balanced diet.  Often in the 1700s and 1800s fruits and vegetables are not very abundant.  This food items are very high in various vitamins and minerals our body needs.  Some of the symptoms Martha wrote about fit some of the vitamin deficiency diseases I am studying. ---Cheryl

What I would like to know is how Martha Ballard had the time to run her own household and take care of her own family as well as be a busy midwife.  She seemed to be on call all the time and at the end of the diary entry in the Woloch book, she said she lost 42 nights of sleep that year! ~Katherine Stinson~
