| + | As many have said before me, this movie is strikingly accurate in its portrayal of the 1950s American south. The filmmakers made an excellent decision in portraying every character (except perhaps the vile brother-in-law) as three dimensional people with conflicted interests and complex motivations. I was particularly impressed by the handling of gender roles. Outside of the home, Miriam is unquestionably superior to Odessa. But within their own family spheres, Odessa is has significantly more influence over her family than Miriam does. Little details, like blacks having to pay at the front of the bus then board in the back or Miriam's being a member of the Junior League, add to the film's air of authenticity. - Sarah Richardson | ||
