| + | I snuck into this movie when I was 13 and even then I was struck by its many similarities to another Mel Gibson movie about freedom and all that jazz: Braveheart. It all starts with the mean English throwing their weight around, oppressing the poor Scots/Americans. An upstanding man, William Wallace/Benjamin Martin, resists entering the conflict until his secret wife/son is brutally murdered by an English lord/colonel. Wallace/Martin then leads a motley crew of locals and raises hell. Hilarity ensues when the Scots moon their opponents on the battlefield/the militia make fake British officers to fool Cornwallis. Eventually, the Scots/Americans defeat the English. The difference is in the ending: Benjamin Martin lives on to return to his paradise plantation of equality and brotherly love, while William Wallace is executed in one of modern cinema's most famous scenes.
