When reading Malefactors and Complainants in Woloch, I was wondering why the men who helped the women to fornicate or misbehave don't get into trouble except for the couple who both confessed their guilt together. Weren't women supposed to be the weaker, non intellgent gender in that day and age?  Shouldn't the men be getting the punishment, after all they are the smarter ones that were all powerfull.--Cheryl

I found the narrative of Old Elizabeth to be quite an emotional one.  Though she was one of a kind, her experience as a slave child must have been shared by many.  Imagine what it was like to be separated from your family, the only familiar aspect of life in a foreign land.  She was willing to risk of the consequences of running away to just see her mother for a short period of time.  This is only a fraction of the hardship and heartbreak felt by many other slave families.--E. Landon Carter complains that it is impossible to make his slaves work.  Encouragement nor punishment have any effect on his them.  Clearly, there was no motivation for them to work.  What were they were working toward?  Freedom was not an option.  Many were separated from their families and in despair.  I found it interesting that Carter does not seem to understand this or that he does not want to understand this.--E.
