i find it interesting that Davis is upset that the Territorial Legislature is interfering "with the rights of person or property" when he is supporting slavery which is taking away the rights of african americans. ---Eun Yi

I felt that in comparison to Douglass' piece about slavery in the constitution, Douglass' had a lot more fact and critical reasoning to stand on. Davis seems to use a somewhat backwards defense, saying nothing of what the constitution MEANS but only how it is being acted out NOW. Douglass addresses the fact that the words of the constitution must be against slavery, and Davis only defends the constitution by saying that the world is how it is, and somehow that proves slavery is legal. It's like he is saying... We use slavery because the constitution says so. The constitution says it's legal because we use slavery. At least, that's the message I received. --Jessica Lawrie
