I found it interesting in James Henry Hammond's Letter to an English Abolitionist, that he uses the Bible as the justification for slavery. It is interesting to me because a lot of abolitionist used the Bible to argue against slavery so it shows how differently interpret the Bible to meet their own ends. -Melissa Brokaw

In The Confessions of Nat Turner it says that the Sprit tells him to return to the service of his master and if he did he would no be beaten.  Could it be possible that the white man recording the confession was interpreting what Turner said differently?  He could have been siding with the white saying that the slave liked working for their masters- but this is usually not true. ~Renee Rosser

Hammond reveals how egocentric he is when he begins to explain that all slaveowners treat their slaves kindly because it will increase profits.Surely not all slaveowners felt or acted this way. Was this egocentrism a common attribute to white, adult males in the south at this time? ---Laura Peters
