| + | "Common Sense" - Although I understand that the colonies were heavily taxed and not treated as true citizens of Britain, I still feel that some of Thomas Paine's points are too bold and conceited. He says that "America would have flourished as much, and probably much more, had no European power had any thing to do with her." I disagree with this because the Indians would have perhaps attacked more often and with greater force had there not been the threat of the British forces. Although the shipbuilding capabilities has increased in the colonies, they needed British ships to trade around the world without the threat of piracy. Paine also states later on that "even the distance at which the Almighty hath placed England over America, is a strong and natural proof, that the authority of the one, over the other, was never the design of Heaven..." So ... how far away is Africa from North America? | ||
