In the letter, "Susan" describes her tasks and typical work day while also responding to a question asking if she, as well as the other mill girls, was content working at Lowell. I wonder how much of the letter is really Harriet speaking and her voice and thoughts and feelings coming through, and how much of it was written to "please" and satisfy her employers, the mill owners. Because the mill owners subsidized the "Lowell Offering", it makes me question how much they may have censored it, in a way, or restricted what was being printed to only those pieces that looked upon themselves in a favorable and satisfactory light. I also wonder what "Susan" (or Harriet) meant when she talked about "Methodist bonnets" at the very end of her letter. I think this story illustrates an ongoing struggle in society, even today for women. On one have hand, most women, like men as well, yearn to feel satisfied at the end of the day with accomplishments they have made. However, women are also expected to be the nurturing care givers to their family. I also found it to be interesting that basically every rule for this school was related to religion. Most of the questions were also about something religious. Except the green fruit one. That seemed a little random to me. The majority of these rules are rules that I would expect from a girls' school in NE. A lot of them seemed more like morals than rules. I couldn't believe that this was printed annually for 15 years. But then again, I guess it makes sense. Honestly, what else would the women at this time read about? Especially during the time of the cult of domesticity. Women were probably interested in ways to be a better wife and homemaker. A lot of the stuff in this does seem like common sense, or at least things they probably already know. I found it interesting when Beecher said "The proper education of a man decides the welfare of an individual; but educate a woman and the interests of the whole family are secured". This story definitely has a connection to modern times. I know a woman, who's in her sixties, and she still barely even breathes without asking her husband. Anytime one of the kids would misbehave, there was always the threat of "I'm telling your dad". Like she was incapable of punishing them herself.
