<p><b>New page</b></p><div>Although the movie was very entertaining and patriotic, it fails in giving a far from accurate accounting of slaves and freed black men involved with the fighting. The movie has only one slave that joins the continental army and earns not only his freedom, but the respect and friendship of those he fought beside during the war. This one character is unable to accurately represent the different ways in which slaves and freed blacks found their lives changed after the fighting stopped. The way the producers use this one character implies that all slaves were freed and whites accepted blacks as their equal. Although some whites may have no grievances against blacks, many, especially in South Carolina, would have not changed their bias views of black men’s place in society. What the film fails to show is different paths many slaves found themselves living after the war. Yes, some were granted their freedom, but others were returned to slavery and many fled and considered dead by their owners after the war.-Debbie M.</div>Dmckenn2
