New page

Email sent -- 4-8-08

'''The interview paper''': By the start of class on Tuesday, April 15, submit the paper in both print and electronic format (emailed attachment--preferably MS Word format).

The two-page paper (with standard 1 inch margins, 12 point font and double spaced--length not including footnotes) must summarize the interviewee’s life and must include key quotes from your interview. Part of the assignment is to take the experiences of one woman’s life and think about how it fits into the larger flow of women’s experiences in the US in the 20th Century. [One way to do that is include references (and even discussion) of related readings in your footnotes.]

All ideas, phrases, and quotes should be cited using footnotes done in consultation with the ''Chicago Manual of Style'' (15th edition) or Kate Turabian’s ''A Manual for Writers'' (7th Edition). [Material discussed in content footnotes must be cited as well. Ask me if you have questions about how to do this.]

In order to protect people's privacy, you may use a pseudonym for the person you interviewed.

'''Online component''': In addition to the writing assignment, everyone will then be expected to look over the other interviews when I get them to you (on Tuesday), and discuss them in our wiki in the week 13 section before class on Thursday, April 17.] What patterns do you see? What experiences stand out? Did these interviews challenge or meet with the trends we've talked about in class?

'''NOTE''': You do not need to post about the reading for April 17 (though you are responsible for reading it).

'''Class discussion''': We will pick up the wiki discussion during class on Thursday, April 17.

'''Extra-Credit Transcripts''': Although it says on the print syllabus that you can earn five points for a transcript, I will offer up to seven (7) additional points added onto your paper (interview) grade if, by the start of class on Thursday, April 24, you also turn in both a printed and electronic transcript of your interview to be posted on a web site of 20th-century women’s lives. All materials (waiver form, printed and electronic versions of transcripts, audio/video tape) must be turned in by the start of class on Thursday, April 24 to receive credit.

An alternative extra-credit assignment is offered for those whose interviewees don’t want to have their interviews published, but you need to contact me immediately to get approval. You'll need to find, get approval for, and then evaluate the historical accuracy and usefulness of a web site addressing US women's history since 1870. And you need to be aware that, given the difficulty of transcribing long interviews, the alternative assignment will not be worth as much (just two (2) points added to your interview assignment grade). It must be turned in by the start of class on Thursday, April 24 in electronic and printed form.

'''If you have ANY questions, ask me now.'''
