Social Services and adoption agencies still have the power to determine who will make "worthy" parents and who won't. That does not make them better parents, nor does it mean that they will love or raise their children better. Not only does this illustrate discrimination but it really shows how much people, particularly doctors, really believed that by making these individuals infertile, society would be improved. Its unfortunate that they did not put more time and attention towards improving their environments instead of removing their fertility. It also surprised me that eugenics and sterilization remained so prevalent event after Hitler's mass sterilizations in Germany. Not unlike today, it seems that there were more couples trying to adopt children then there were children up for adoption. Many individuals appear to have been desperate to adopt to escape the stigma of childlessness. I was also amazed to learn that forms of artificial reproduction were used in the late 1800s. On all sides of the issues people used such strong language, like the one woman complaining about all the "breeder propaganda" in the media. I was most surprised by people like her who were vehemently against having children in general. There is a difference between "that's not right for me" and "why is this breeder propaganda everywhere!?"
