My (suburban upper middle-class white) mentality has always thought of the draft as something that if you didnt want to go, you simply had to go to college. I actually had never thought that if one couldn't afford college then they had no choice than to fight in a war they might not agree with at all. '''The entire time I was reading this essay, the only thing running through my mind was, "Good grief Robinson is incredible!"''' What I truly loved about her is that she cared for the movement. She wasn't about appearances, she wasn't about making herself known, she wasn't about making the world aware of how much she did, she just went after what she believed in. She pushed boundaries and, as a black woman during a white return to domesticity, really stood up for her beliefs. We read and learn about Rosa Parks and Ella Baker and all these other prominent women involved with the Civil Rights movement and all of it is empowering. Reading about even more women than the "big names" that we've all known since elementary school makes it that much more impressive. These women went against overwhelming odds and had their femininity attacked because of the way they stepped outside their "feminine roles." It's impressive how involved women were in the Civil Rights movement, as well as how high up their positions were within the organizations. However, I'm still having a hard time grasping the fact that Ruby was a debutante. And, as a former majorette myself, I'm proud to learn she twirled a baton at one point too. -- Kelly Wuyscik
